Henkel South Africa raises money for fight against cancer
Cancer affects millions of people worldwide every year, and hair loss is a well-known side effect of cancer treatments, chemotherapy in particular. This March, employees from Henkel South Africa showed their support for those living with cancer and raised funds to help the Cancer Association of South Africa (CANSA) by organizing a CANSA Shavathon event at their workplace.
During a Shavathon, people can shave their heads in symbolic support for cancer survivors. Dyeing one’s hair or paying a “bail out fee” are also options for those who prefer not to shave, but who still want to participate.
“I was really touched by how passionate our team is about this cause,” said Angela Smith, Technical Assistant of Schwarzkopf’s ASK hairdresser education project, and Professional Partner Services (PPS) Manager at Henkel Beauty Care in South Africa. “Not only was I given the opportunity to work with people from different areas within Henkel, but I was also able to work side by side with team members who have survived cancer. It was an awesome experience and we had a great team.”
Smith was one of the Beauty Care employees who offered their expertise at the event and gave colleagues advice on professional hair “shaved” styles.
“The CANSA Shavathon was a moving experience and demonstrated our team’s commitment to making a difference in the lives of others,” says Tracy Mitchley - Marketing Communications Manager at Henkel in South Africa and organizer of the Shavathon.
